my favorite batch ever.
must be the Santa Barbara air.

6 c oats
1 c sesame seeds
1 c pumpkin seeds
1-2 c walnuts
1-2 c hazelnuts
1 c hemp seeds
2 tsp salt
1 tbsp nutmeg
1 tbsp cardamom
1/2 c honey (softened if necessary)
1/2 c fresh orange juice
  3 tbsp olive oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 c currants (plumped in hot water for 10 min)

mix oats, seeds, nuts, salt, spices.
in separate bowl whisk honey, orange juice, oil, & vanilla.
add wet ingredients to dry, toss to mix.
bake on sheets @ 350-375 until golden brown.
remove baking sheets from oven throughout cooking to mix granola around on tray (edges tend to cook fastest).
add currants once granola is removed from oven.

ps. if you're serious,
whole greek yogurt and a drizzle of maple syrup

T H E  S T O R Y

there were 80 acres of undeveloped property behind our house when i was growing up.  80 acres of beautiful old oak trees, tall grasses, starthistle, blackberries, deer, coyote, rattlesnakes, & hawks.  my family always referred to it as "the 80 acres."

as a little girl the woods were a vast space that represented things unknown and mysterious. i was curious, knowing that there was so much to discover just on the opposite side of the barbed-wire fence.
